About us

The Velvet Buttercream is more than just a bakery; it's a family legacy. As a third-generation baker with over 20 years of experience and a culinary degree from the Art Institute of Phoenix, Aaron has honed his skills to ensure that every cake tells a story. Our commitment to quality and creativity allows us to design cakes that not only please the eye but also tantalize the palate.

What is The Velvet Buttercream?

This 16 year old recipe was created by our Chef and Owner, Aaron. The Signature Velvet Buttercream is described as a lightly sweetened melt in your mouth vanilla buttercream that is designed like a traditional buttercream, as fluffy as whipped cream, and yet as velvety smooth and flavorful as a cream cheese icing. 

Three layers or five?

Our cakes are built with 3-layers of cake and 2-layers of filling, however if you're interested in a tall sophisticated look we offer a 5-layer "Tall-boy" cake as a premium option for some sizes.  The five-layer "Tall-boy" cake is the standard in each tier for our wedding cakes and large tiered cakes  

Pricing is simple

Our cakes start at $44 for a 6" scratch baked 3-layer cake, or for that added wow factor you can make it a 5-layer "Tall-boy" for a small premium. Unique designs will add a premium depending on the level of intricacy. We also offer preset Signature cakes that only change price based on the size of the cake.

Fresh cakes anytime!

We bake fresh daily, and minimum lead times can be 1-5 days depending on how busy we are. As a general rule of thumb is to order the cake ahead of time to ensure you make it onto our schedule. If you need a cake last minute we have several options available in our display case ready at a moment's notice.

Meet the Chef

Chef Aaron

Aaron's rich culinary passion dates back to his great grandfather, Joe Romo, who owned and operated "The Holbrook Bakery" in Holbrook Arizona.  Joe passed away in 1979 though his legacy was continued through his son Esequiel Romo, or Sikie as he was known around town.  The Romo legacy of fresh baked donuts, cakes, & pastries was well known in the Holbrook and throughout Northeastern Arizona.  Aaron's mother, Elaine, told stories of gathering money and skipping class to go down to the shop just to buy fresh donuts for the class. 

Aaron began his culinary journey his freshman year of high school in 2004 with a class called "Foods 1" taught by Kay Shores.  He loved this class so much he took "Foods 2" the following year followed by "Culinary 1-4" for the remainder of his high school tenure.  He competed in five competitions during that time walking  away with a Bronze, two Silver, a Gold, as well as a First Place Team win, along with attending a National Culinary Competition.

Aaron advanced to The Art Institute of Phoenix where he earned his way onto the Dean's List for three consecutive semester's.   Graduating in 2006 he wasted no time and began work in his industry as a Tournant Chef to learn every aspect of the kitchen before settling on his passion of working with sweets.  He displayed the want to learn, excel, and create nothing but the best.  A value which he still holds to this day.

In 2010 he began laying the foundation for what is now "The Velvet Buttercream".  He began pouring endless hours and money into his R&D projects to bring you the best he has to offer.  No stone has been left un-turned, no cup of sugar left uncooked.  He is truly in it to change your perceptions by combining new modern with old classical.
